The last night
We had gone the whole trip without seeing either a leopard or an adult male lion. Charles said at the last lunch that anyone who wanted to could go with him on a long, long ride in a last-ditch attempt to find the leopard. I volunteered, determined to see the last of the big five.
We went way out into the Serengeti and finally saw, in a tree far away, a baby leopard and his mama sprawled out in the branches, with the remnants of kill. We stayed there for an hour just marvelling at them. It was amazing.
On the drive home, we passed a herd of wildebeest, and in front of them, we saw a huge, full-maned lion. The sun was low in the sky and his mane was glowing with a rich, deep red. It was wonderful. Alison got some video of this one, so hopefully I will be able to post the video at some point soon.
As we were approaching camp, we saw the prettiest sunset I have ever seen.
It was a very good ride.
