Welcome to the Jungle

After lunch, we descended into the crater. We were greeted a minute in by this unlucky fellow.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a caldera, a collapsed volcano. For humans, there is one way in and one way out. For animals, there are a couple of paths out of the crater and into the Serengeti. For the most part, the crater is a self-contained ecosystem preserved by the Tanzanian government as part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Everything is out in the open and the animals are habituated to the vehicles (which will be amply demonstrated in just a few minutes). The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the best places in the world to view wildlife.

And we have just driven in.
