Land of pink lakes

The road to Ngorongoro was mostly uphill. We climbed about 1000 meters in the course of the morning on our way to the crater. The landscapes on the way up were breathtaking. This is me by the side of the road.

The lakes were oddly colored. They are extremely alkali, so they often take on a brownish/pinkish tint. From a distance, it looked like there were sand bars in the middle of the lakes.

At this altitude, the mornings were actually pretty chilly, so we would dress in layers to make it through the day. I'd give you a link to where you can buy an Amazon.com fleece like this one, but that particular experiment has ended and they are no longer available.
