How to promote good behavior in message boards
Monday, June 23rd, 2003
Bruce Allen, of the excellent Boston Sports Media Watch, took down his “Tagboard”, a spot on his page where the general public could post messages. The tagboard shared the fate of all public, anonymous posting areas: It was eventually overrun by bozos.
So, Bruce is doing something very smart, he’s creating a message board with three key components:
- You must pay a nominal fee to register
- You must validate your real identity
- Approval is not immediate
These three simple requirements will foil 99% of the bozos. Very smart community building.
